I have a golden retreiver and they where bred to retreive rabbits that hunters had killed. When I found this out I was a bit surprised since Barney can not retrieve a ball if his life depended on it. It is really cute watching him try though. Barney always has a toy in his mouth and when you throw a ball he used to run up to it drop his toy pick up the ball, then drop the ball and pick up his toy and run back. Now he is a bit better and he brings the ball back but he never seems to want to let it go and usely ends up eating it.

Lol

I love hunter dogs

Brianna.... ALL dogs can retrieve something... they just need to be trained.... Gundogs... Cockers, Retrievers etc, are trained from when they first start to walk.... First it is the Noise of the Gun going off, and also retrieval... They are also taught with the Retrieval how to HOLD whatever it is..... This is so that when they go get a rabbit, Duck or whatever that is injured, the shooter MIGHT want to eventually release it or use for the Pot.. and they do NOT want the dog getting a taste of whatever it is they have brought back....  So just because your Retriever does not bring back anything is OK... He has not been TAUGHT to bring anything back....and THAT is NOT a reflection on you or anyone else.... SOME dogs are like that....... My Cav is like that unless he is in a playful mood... and then it is only certain things he will be bring back... but my Cocker I had many years ago brought back EVERYTHING.... and I didn't have to teach her..... Your Barney is typical of the Gundog breeds.... and this is WHY they have to teach them the "soft mouth" method of retrieval.  Enjoy Barney and I hope you have a wonderful life together.... a good dog IS a man's or woman's best friend...
