Salivating Sushi Snacks!!!

Your dog dosen't have to be Japanese to enjoy these novel and nutritious treats. Made with nori, a dried sea vegetable, these sushi snacks are full of nutritious minerals!!

Makes:5

Preparation time:30 minutes

Cooking time:3 minutes

You will need:

- 2 carrots, cut lengthways into thin strips

- 100g (3 1/2 oz) lamb heart or kidneys, trimmed and cut into strips

- 3 sheets of Japanese sushi nori

- 200g (7 oz) short-grain sticky rice, cooked and cooled

-3 tablespoons natural tomato puree

- 1/4 cucumber, cut lengthways into thin strips

Method:

1.Boil the carrot strips for 2 minutes, remove from the water, rinse and set aside to cool. Poach the strips of kidney or heart in the boiling water for 1 minute to seal, then set aside to cool.

2.Place 1 sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat or piece of greaseproof paper. Spread half the rice on to the nori, leaving a 1-cm (1/2 inch) bare edge at the top and bottom. Don't over fill with rice.

3.Spread half the tomato puree along the centre of the rice, moving from left to right. Place some strips of heart or kidney on either side of the vegetables.

4.Gently roll up the sushi, starting with the edge nearest to you. Pull the edge of the sushi mat or greaseproof paper back as you go so it doesn't get rolled up with the sushi. When you get to the other edge of the sushi sheet, wet the nori with a pastry brush dipped in cold water and continuing rolling to seal. Repeat with the other sheet of nori and the remaining filling ingredients.

5.Cut the sushi rolls with a sharp, moistened knife into 3.5-cm (1 1/2-inch) pieces. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate. Use on the same day.

Tips' n' Tail:

Nori seaweed is rich in vitamins, including C and B12, and in minerals and trace minerals. The most important is iodine, essential for regulating your dog's metabolism and energy levels, but can be harmful in large quantities. Nori contains high levels of iodine, so don't feed this treat to him on a daily basis.
